For Granted recognizes that the cost of each maternal death is higher than the loss of one woman. Maternal mortality sets off a causal chain that directly impacts the survival and prosperity of the victim’s children and her community. More women die from pregnancy related causes in India than anywhere in the world; with a woman having a 1 in 70 lifetime chance of dying in childbirth. There is simply no justification for these preventable deaths - women are dying due to the unavailability of basic health care services.
In an effort to support the Maternal Mortality Reduction Project that is spearheaded by the Human Rights Law Network and the MacArthur Foundation, For Granted sent two consultants, a Human Rights Lawyer and a Public Health Practitioner, to provide support for a period of four months. The For Granted consultants provided valuable technical assistance in legal, policy and advocacy areas of maternal health care in India.
